Learning By Volunteering Project

For the past three years meetings have been taking place with the Developing Volunteering in Scotland’s Colleges group. This group was represented by various colleges from across Scotland, key volunteering organisations, SFC and Scottish Government. One of the main highlights with support from SFC was the Volunteering Conference in March 2008 where it was made clear that student volunteering was very much on everyones agenda.

In October 2009 a partnership bid from Angus, Adam Smith, Langside colleges and Scotland’s colleges attracted funds from SFC to ‘Develop and embed a culture of volunteering in colleges, where engaging in volunteering activities whilst at college becomes commonplace amongst our learners’. This project is lead by Angus College Principal, John Burt.

This project recognises that students can enhance their college learning by engaging in volunteering activities and in particular volunteering experiences that can help build the attributes and skills of the four capacities of Curriculum for Excellence. In addition volunteering is linked to many other college agendas including active citizenship, employability, 16+ learning choices, employability and essential skills development, core skills development and lifelong learning.
