A Govan Wave of Change

Introduction

As part of the People Making Waves project (the Scottish component of the Olympic Legacy Trust UK) A Govan Wave of Change delivered a session during January 2010 that engaged directly with key players in Govan - encouraging and supporting them to create personal stories about their experiences, friendships and connections.  Some of the stories created during that session are attached here.

The purpose of A Scottish Wave of Change and its potential in Govan:
A Scottish Wave of Change is a national community story-telling initiative which is delivered at a local level. It is a wonderful opportunity for people to tell their stories, inspire their communities and build a people’s future for their area.
Collectively, these stories will build a people’s future for Scotland

The Olympic values can be used as a starting point to imagine a different future for Govan:

  • excellence
  • friendship
  • respect
  • determination
  • inspiration
  • courage
  • equality

A GOVAN WAVE OF CHANGE – PROGRESS TO DATE

The group, which formed the core of the first Govan Wave of Change session, has been meeting informally for about 18 months to take forward a vision for Govan’s Cultural Campus (Govan Old Parish Church, the Pearce Institute and the land surrounding these important buildings). The group sees the potential to use the Govan Wave of Change project as a way of broadening the base of their vision for the Campus by inviting people to think about and discuss:

  • The potential of Govan’s Cultural Campus
  • The values of a future Govan which are embedded there
  • New forms and practices of participation, learning and engagement
  • How to describe and achieve the changes we imagine

The next activity organised by A Govan Wave of Change and scheduled for ????? will create the opportunity for a broader range of stakeholders to come together around some of the emerging ideas for Govan’s Cultural Campus, ultimately, creating a people’s vision of what Govan could become by 2020.

WHAT WOULD SUCCESS LOOK LIKE?

  • A genuinely open set of Govan conversations, which are open and not controlled by any outside agency, addressing what kind of future people wish;
  • A different idea, practice and application of engagement, shaped by the concerns and interests of local people;
  • A more outward looking, confident Govan, connected, with a sense of new possibilities, and new ideas and stories;
  • All of the above could lead to a new vision for Govan, created and shaped by the people of Govan.
